Our Bodies require constant maintenance. It is an inescapable fact - like gravity. If we choose to ignore it, it will cost us dearly. If we stand at the edge of a precipice and try to ignore gravity and step out into the void, we will pay for it with our life. Our Bodies are also part of the natural order of things and demand similar respect and attention.
French physicist Sadi Carnot presented a scientific paper called "Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire" in 1824, and in it, he discussed the natural order of things and presented what is now generally called the second law of Thermodynamics. In essence it indicates that things with concentrated energy levels, if left alone, will eventually decay to the general energy level of the Universe.
This means that if we don't care for our Bodies and our natural environment, they will eventually breakdown and end up in the state of the matter they are made of (ie the elements) - like a house that is not lived in. With no maintenance, over a long period of time, it will eventually decay and fall down.
We can take care of our Bodies, in large part by what we put into them and by maintaining the systems. Our Bodies are a complex chemical factory. By carefully controlling the chemicals ( food, drink and other substances ) we administer to it, we can adjust the systems to restore balance.
